A Blue Blazer of a Different Color — The Go-To Layer

Tony Gorga Styles the Blue Blazer

The solid, go-to navy blue blazer is a staple piece in anybody’s closet. For many, that very blazer is wool – either flannel or worsted. But for me, that seems a little fuddy-duddy. I prefer something a little more unique, but still infinitely versatile for my Friday day/night transition.

Consider then, a blue of a slightly different hue.

One of my go-to’s, this blazer is from J.Crew, who sits among the most American of Americana heritage brands. And interestingly enough, it’s not worsted, flannel, or cashmere at all —  it’s actually cotton, and it’s cut from the Italian textile mill Larusmiani.

The cotton is not only thick, but hefty as well, which feels solid and trustworthy upon first touch. That heavier weight makes it perfect to wear from spring through early fall when the temperature begins to fall. If you dwell in warmer climates, this just might work all year ‘round!

This blazer is lined only in the sleeves. The buttons are plastic, but they have a good weight and a detailed pattern, adding depth and character. As a convenient bonus, the wrist buttons are also non-functional, meaning they are sewn on as an accent and NOT to button, which happens to make any tailoring a snap.

If you look closely, this blazer is definitely not navy. It’s not a deep navy, it’s not even a “bright navy,” or some other slightly oxymoronic descriptor the manufacturers are coming up these days. But J.Crew calls this one “Caspian Sea,” and in my experience, it’s more versatile that you’d think. Consider it with chinos, I especially recommend olive green. Throw on a gingham shirt and knit tie for something even more interesting.

My Go-To Blue Blazer Outfit

For date night with the wife, I begin the outfit with my blue blazer and build the rest around that.

My shirt is a classic oxford-cloth button-down, or “OCBD,” from Brooks Brothers’ Red Fleece line. In my view, this is one of the best bang-for-your buck options on the market. It’s thicker, but forms to the body nicely, making it an optimal piece for layering under a sweater.

This raw, timber-stitch pair from DSTLD are a little broken-in and are starting to show their character. You can leave them uncuffed at the office, and then give them a little turn once the clock strikes five. I’d typically reach for a pair of deep, dark indigo denim, but they’re just a little too crispy for this look — walking out of a date like the Tin Man just isn’t attractive.

Finding the right footwear is essential, and for me there’s none more versatile than the double monk strap. Smooth leather or suede make equally good options here. I’ve opted for the suede in this case.

A pocket square is a great finishing touch. I’ve added a pop of color here, welcoming red as an accent. Green, deep orange, or purple could work just as well.

There you have it, gents — a blue blazer of a different color, and my personal go-to. Your turn, guys. What’s your go-to outfit?

Yours In Style,

Tony
